We are excited to have received a grant from the Ontario Trillium Fund which will allow our therapists to engage in Professional Development. The courses are helping to expand what our therapists can offer to our clients to assist in the healing process.  We also received money to engage a consulting firm to help us make CCO the best it can be! We are thankful for this blessing!

Dr. John Robert Groves
April 22, 1943 - November 6, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Dr. John Robert Groves on Monday, November 6, 2022. We had the privilege of having Dr Groves as our Clinical Psychologist at CCO for over 11 years, and he had an immense impact on CCO during that time. The therapists he supervised through the years have benefitted from his wealth of knowledge, and he demonstrated great care and concern for each of us.  We were blessed to have him as part of our team!

Dr. Groves portrait

There are many memories and words of appreciation that could be said about Dr. Groves and his work at CCO. Here are a handful of statements that provide some insight into his influence:

Dr. Groves was my clinical supervisor, mentor and friend. I found I could go to him with an issue without fear of chastisement, even if I had made a mistake. He was someone with whom I could be transparent, and know that I would be treated with respect and support. He was a peaceful presence, asking questions to help me work through an issue and come away feeling understood.  He was one of those rare people who left me feeling encouraged with each encounter I had with him. I will miss him, even while what he put into my life lives on. “

“I think I learned more from my years of supervision with Dr Groves than I did in my whole graduate degree. His “out-of-the-box” thinking helped me to relax about my own approach to therapy and to discern what my clients needed from me.”

“It was truly a pleasure to be mentored by Dr. Groves. I consider myself lucky to have been guided by him at such an early point in my career. May his legacy live on through our work.”

“Dr. Groves played a special part in helping me launch as a psychotherapist.  He purposefully took the time to share his legacy with the staff at CCO.  We have been blessed.”

“Truly I have been pondering this loss in my heart all weekend. The weight of the loss but the beauty and ways hes touched so many in his lifetime. And in the short time I was privileged to learn from him and work with him, an honour and a gift.”

Supervision sessions with Dr. Groves were always insightful. He had a calm presence with words of wisdom and encouragement to share. He taught me to prioritize relationships over interventions, to trust myself as a therapist. and to be carried by God’s wisdom. He had a way of bringing a lightness to the work, as well as a strong confidence in his therapists and also our clients’ abilities to heal. His heart of service

Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based therapy and is intended to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. Registered Psychotherapists work with individuals, couples and families in individual and group settings. Psychotherapy occurs when the Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both work together to bring about positive change in the client's thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning.
